Watching movies on more levels
By Robert Bridge
We all watch movies and we invest our time in films. Movies depending on the genre have a set narrative, and this narrative has to comply to certain traditions depending on what genre the film is. Often these genres can be traced back to other genres, and more often than not there is more than one genre for each given film. Understanding these principles is one way you can get more value and cultural understanding then share with friends who also watch these films. This Intel is precisely about informing or reminding you about these media related enriching elements of life that are often overlooked. One example of genre is the Western. The more traditional genre untouched and un-hybridized up until about the mid 1960's. The great thing about western films is there is an amazing amount of literature out there that can example the many levels of things you can expect throughout the film. Some of these things you may not notice depending on your cultural background knowledge. Many westerns even when hybridized between other cultural impressions always follow a certain theme which is regarded as traditional and related to imperial folk culture. For more information on this you could try Todorov (1977). Tzvetan Todorov a narratologist compares these ongoing systems used between the western genre and other genres to similar systems of logic and grammar. The western genre in its original form is sourced from Popular American movies, but the hybridization has occurred through counter cultures that apposed the popular culture. This is not to say the wild west became any more violent in its narrative by this use of counter culture or that the counter culture should be seen as a negative effect on Western films. What is noticeable when you understand or learn more about culture is that you will be able to see a difference in ideological messages (often confusing, the more hybridized overtime the message becomes). Even without any counter cultures - ideologies change as history changes. One thing that never changes is the original story, we have lost these stories to some extents. Storytelling is now delivered by media: TV, Cinema, Mobile Phone and Internet replacing the original format of Word of Mouth passed down from Generation to Generation. We all know how useful improving our grammar is so by understanding his narrative patterns and many other authors who have expanded on this; will easily be a valid conversational piece you can invest in that will stay with you for the rest of your life. By understanding the genre as we all do we can guarantee - when watching a film - we both know what we are watching before the film starts. Thus saving discontentment and arguing over the remote control or worse still your friend leaving you in the cinema, with an extra bucket of popcorn and another huge coke to slurp. |
